Frequently Asked Questions on Eye Day Surgery

  • Will the surgery be covered by Medicare?

MetWest Surgical is a private hospital, so if you do not have private health insurance there will be out-of-pocket costs associated with your surgery.  Prior to booking your surgery, staff will discuss these costs with you.
  • Will the surgery be covered by my health fund?

MetWest Surgical has contracts with all the major health funds.   Depending on your level of cover, an “excess” may be payable for the hospital.

Prior to booking your surgery, staff will go through an informed financial consent, ensuring you have all the information necessary regarding costs.  Staff at the centre will check whether you have an excess payable and inform you of this.  You may also have out-of-pocket costs associated with the surgeon or anaesthetist that the staff will also discuss.

  • How long will my hospital stay be?

The average length of stay at the day surgery is 3-4 hours, however this can depend on the type of surgery that you are undergoing.
  • Do I need someone to drive me home?

Yes, as you are undergoing a procedure in a day surgery centre, you must have someone drive you home.  If you are having sedation for the procedure, we advise you not to drive or sign any legal documents for at least 24 hours.
